1920A Romantic Beginning

The Original Cabin is Built

Log Haven began its romantic appeal in 1920, when Mr. L. F. Rains, a Salt Lake businessman and member of the Metropolitan Opera Company, created this log hideaway as a wedding anniversary gift for his wife. Logs from Oregon were shipped via San Francisco to Salt Lake City and then hauled up Millcreek Canyon by horse drawn wagon. Since the many fireplaces were Log Haven’s only source of heat, the structure was used as a summer home by the Rains family and became a gathering place for many local executives to explore the mountains, fish in the creek, and hatch plans for the future of Salt Lake City and Utah.

The DepressionResidence to Restaurant

A Restaurant is Born

During the Depression, an insurance executive named Gleed Miller bought Log Haven and turned it into a year-round residence. He added additional rooms and built an ice skating pond and horse stables across the road. When the Miller children grew up and left their wilderness-near-the-city-nest, the property passed to Stanley Sprouse, who converted the log home to a restaurant.

1994A Restoration

Margo Provost

In 1994, Margo Provost completely restored this log building and founded the current restaurant, owning the majority and managing it until her retirement in 2026. Faith Scheffler joined Margo as a partner in the business and remained a partner through her retirement, continuing today as a link between Log Haven’s past and its present.

2026New Adventures

A New Beginning

In January 2026, Log Haven was purchased by Brandon Hargett and Teri and Flynn Paulson, who are preserving its legacy while carrying it forward into a future full of new adventures and the promise of great things to come. Brandon also owns Ruby River Steakhouses and Aker Restaurant and Bar. Teri and Flynn own Integrated Solutions, a business that combines payroll, human resources, accounting, and compliance tasks into one package. Faith Scheffler remains a partner alongside them, carrying forward a connection to Log Haven’s history since the Margo Provost era.

Log Haven has been profiled in Gourmet, Delta SKY, Cowboys and Indians, Food & Wine and Bon Appétit Magazines, as well as USA Today. The Zagat Survey lists Log Haven in the top restaurants and calls Log Haven “unsurpassed, spectacular mountain setting...with consistently innovative and delicious American-eclectic cuisine.”

Our belief in Log Haven and our appreciation for its past as well as its future have resulted in a wonderful blend of tradition and elegance. Log Haven is synonymous with clear waterfalls, colorful wildflowers, fresh mountain air, crackling fires and the finest cuisine.
